Geography

Japan comprises over 3000 islands, of which four of the largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. South of Kyushu is a chain of islands called the Ryukyu islands, which include Okinawa. Together they form the Japanese archipelago. Japan is a mountainous country. Only a small percentage of the country is flat land, and this is were most of the population resides.
