More on Chuncheon

The area around Chuncheon has been inhabited for over a thousand years. The earliest settlement here was Usooju, which was established in AD 637. Since then, it has changed names a number of times, to Saku in AD 757, to Chunju in 940, and finally to its present name, Chuncheon, in 1413. It was made the capital of Gangwon Province in 1896. The city suffered massive devastation during the Korean War but has since been fully reconstructed.

Local Delicacies

Chuncheon is famous for its chicken ribs, called dak galbi, which in fact uses not only the ribs, but the whole chicken and other ingredients including sweet potatoes, Chinese cabbage, tteok (rice cakes) and scallions.

Another famous dish of Chuncheon is makguksu, a Korean buckwheet noodle dish that is served in a chilled broth. The dish is so closely associated with the city that it even holds an annual festival to celebrate it. Chuncheon even has a makguksu museum.
