Ban Pak Ou Travel Info
Ban Pak Ou is a small Laotian village on the Mekong River. It is located in a picturesque setting, directly opposite the famous Pak Ou Caves. Behind Ban Pak Ou are tall limestone mountains.
Most of its inhabitants depend on fishing the Mekong River for a living. They set their nets and fish traps on the Mekong River. When I visited Pak Ou Caves, I saw the fishermen with their nets. The village supplies its catch to the market at Luang Prabang.
Ban Pak Ou has a small elementary school. Lately, to cash in on the stream of visitors to Pak Ou Caves, eateries were set up with views of the Mekong River. Souvenir shops have also been The Department of Tourism erected a rest house here for the day use of visitors.
After visiting the caves, my group of AsiaExplorers members and I adjourned here for our lunch. The view is simply great. After lunch, I did a bit of exploration. There was a boat repairman by the bank of the Mekong. Further upriver I came across vegetable plots. It was a lovely rural setting.
If you're going to Luang Prabang, you'd be glad to know that the town is quite small. You can go to most places on foot if you want to. Otherwise, you can also catch a tuk tuk to take you around. As for accommodation, they range from very simple, basic beds to boutique hotels. You can visit the Luang Prabang Hotels guide for a list of budget accommodation.
