Hai Hin Phu Salato
Plain of Jars Site 2, Xieng Khouang Province, Laos
The Plain of Jars Site 2 is also called Hai Hin Phu Salato. It is located approximately 25 km south of Phonsavan in the village of Ban Nakho, in Phaxay district. After visiting Site 1, we have an idea what to expect at Site 2. Our driver was reluctant to take us, but we insisted that we wanted to see all three sites.
It turns out that getting there was not as difficult as the driver made it out to be. Perhaps he wasn't totally familiar with the direction, and that's the reason for his reluctance. He had to ask for directions once or twice, but we made it without any trouble.
Stone jar at Hai Hin Phu Salato, the Plain of Jars Site 2.
There was a guardpost at Site 2 where our tour guide had to register us. The signboard from the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) stated that this site was cleared of UXO between 22 October 2004 and 21 January 2005, and that they removed 26 pieces of UXO plus 11,770 pieces of scrap. 93 stone jars were recorded here, and just like site 1, consists of two sections. The first section is located on top of a hill that is quite steep. At the top of the hill is a tree, and the jars are all scattered below the tree. Unlike the jars in Site 1, those found under the tree as not round but squarish and elongated.
About 300 meters from the hill is a smaller hillock, with panoramic views all around. There were a few stone jars here too. We spend about half an hour at Site 2 and then proceeded to the third and final site.
To view photographs and admire the jars more closely, follow the links provided to Site 1, Site 2 and Site 3 of the Plain of Jars.
Site 2 has the most scenic views.
