![]() Fruit vendor at the night market at Phou Khoun. Phou Khoun is not a tourist destination. It is simply a stopover point for trips between Phonsavan and Luang Prabang. I visited it with members of AsiaExplorers when we were Laos. We arrived late in the evening (night falls quite early in December in Laos), and stopped at Phou Khoun for some of us to freshen up. Like many rural towns in Laos, Phou Khoun was pretty quiet at night. There are a few shops clustered around the town square selling fruits and meals. We find the level of hygiene not up to par - indeed a few of us came down with diarrhoea towards the middle of the trip. From Phou Khoun, we continued our journey heading towards Luang Prabang. It was a very long journey. The next stop we made was at another rural town, Kiu Kacham. Getting Accommodation in Luang PrabangIf you're going to Luang Prabang, you'd be glad to know that the town is quite small. You can go to most places on foot if you want to. Otherwise, you can also catch a tuk tuk to take you around. As for accommodation, they range from very simple, basic beds to boutique hotels. You can visit the Luang Prabang Hotels guide for a list of budget accommodation.![]() A petrol kiosk in rural Phou Khoun. |
