Gruta Luís de Camões

The Camões Grottos or Gruta Luís de Camões is a man-made grotto within the Camoes Garden in Macau. It was named after Portuguese poet Luis de Camões (1524-1580). He lived in Macao for two years and finished the last part of his masterpiece The Lusiads in the grotto. The grotto is formed by three large stone slabs. A wealthy Portuguese merchant, Lourenço Marques, had the grotto renovated in 1849 and the statue of Luis de Camões was erected inside.

The grotto was last renovated in 1866.
