Lo Wan

Coloane, or Lo Wan in Cantonese, is an island on the southernmost part of Macau. It measures 4km in length, and is separated from the Macau peninsula by the island of Taipa. Lately, land reclamation has merged the islands of Coloane and Taipa into one single island. The new land in between these two islands is called Cotai, an amalgam of Coloane and Taipa, and here, several mega projects are being developed.

Coloane, on the other hand, retains its rural ambience. The north shore of Coloane is occupied by the Macau Deepwater Port. Hac Ba Beach to the east and Cheoc Van Bay to the south of Coloane are popular picnic and swimming beaches. At Baía de Hác Sá is the famous Portuguese restaurant Fernandos. 171-metre Alto de Coloane is the highest point in Macau.

Among the tourist sights on Coloane include a few Chinese temples such as the Tam Kung Temple and Kun Iam Temple, as well as the Chapel of St Francis Xavier. There is also a huge statue of A-Ma, said to be the biggest of this deity in the world.

Getting there

Among the buses that go to Coloane include Nos. 15, 21, 21A, 25, 26 and 26A.
