The 1 Utama Shopping Centre, also unofficially written as One Utama, is a major shopping complex in Malaysia. I photographed it for AsiaExplorers as part of the documentation of major sites in the Klang Valley. Although technically it is outside Kuala Lumpur, I am placing it within the Kuala Lumpur section until I have built up sufficient pages of sites within Petaling Jaya. It is located at Bandar Utama, a suburb of the city of Petaling Jaya. 1 Utama is operated and managed by Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn Bhd. With a gross built up area of 5 million sq feet, spread over 6 retail floors, 1 Utama is one of the biggest retail centres in Malaysia.

The New Wing of 1 Utama was opened by the Sultan of Selangor, HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on April 2, 2004. Within the vicinity of 1 Utama are other retail developments including Centrepoint, The Curve, Ikea, Cathay Cineleisure and Ikano. It has two anchor tenants namely Jusco and Giant and a number of well-known outlets including MPH, A&W, Burger King, KFC, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver's, Starbucks, Nando's and Shakey's Pizza. 1 Utama houses two major cinemas, namely Tanjung Golden Village and Golden Screen Cinema, together providing a total of 20 screens.

1 Utama is divided into five themed zones called Highstreet, Oval, Rainforest, Promenade, Promenade Lakeside, Centre Court, Courtyard and the Entertainment Zone. At the time of writing (July 2006), 1 Utama is embarking on another phase of extension, to include a 20-storey office tower and a 5-star luxury hotel.
