The area known today as Ampang is located east of the Jalan Tun Razak. Jalan Ampang, along with the Kuala Lumpur-Ampang Elevated Highway, form an east-pointing finger out of Kuala Lumpur in the direction of Ampang. The Kuala Lumpur side of Ampang is more urbanised, and Jalan Ampang itself is home to several embassies. It is also an upmarket residential area for diplomats.
History of Ampang
Ampang is believed to be the initial site in Kuala Lumpur where tin was first mined. This happened in the late 1850's, when a group of Chinese labourers from Lukut were employed by Raja Abdullah and Raja Jumaat. They arrived by boat, disembarking by the bank of the Klang River near its confluence with the Gombak River. From there, they trekked to Ampang, where tin ore was in abundance.
