Anderson School or Sekolah Menengah Anderson is the premier non-missionary school in Ipoh. Established on 6 February, 1909, it was named after the High Commissioner of the Malay States, Sir John Anderson. On Day One the school had six classrooms holding 52 students, housed in the building on Douglas Road that today houses the Perak Religious Office.
The school was popular with Malay students who are unable to get a place at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar but were reluctant to attend classes at the Christian missionary schools such as the Anglo Chinese School.
When the original building became over crowded, additional classes were held at the Ipoh Masonic Lodge on Maxwell Road (now Jalan Tun Abdul Razak). The present school building on Ashby Road (now Jalan Hospital) was completed in 1931. All but three classes were relocated into the new premises until 1937, when all classes were held at the Ashby Road premises for the first time.
