Argus Lane, George Town

[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Argus Lane is a small lane behind the Cathedral of the Assumption in George Town. This is where the early Eurasians lived. This community had come to Penang at the invitation of Captain Francis Light, who was keen to bring in peoples from all over to his newly established settlement.

The Eurasian community had initially established their church at what is now Church Street. They had called it the Church of the Assumption, because they arrived in Penang on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption in 1786. In around 1802, they moved their church to its present site at Farquhar Street, and a large part of the Catholic community settled on the lane behind the church, which is Argus Lane.

Most of the original descendents of the Eurasian community connected to the Church of the Assumption had long left Penang. Nevertheless, a walk down Argus Lane will reveal the Catholic character to some of the houses, with portraits of Jesus Christ on the front door of a few.
