About Batang Baram

Batang Baram is a mighty river on the northern part of Sarawak. It starts in the Kayan and Kenyah hinterland. This area of Sarawak is sparsely populated and still heavily forested, although logging has made inroads. a small number of Penans still live a seminomadic lifestyle as hunter-gatherers in the upper reaches of the river.

Surrounding the town of Marudi are logging roads that go deep into the forests. Visiting these remote places beyond Marudi require a permit from the Pejabat Residen (Tel: 433205, Jalan Kingway, Mon-Fri: 8:00 am - 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Sat: 8:00 am - 1:00 pm) in Miri. You will need to present your passport and fill up a form with details of your intended visit.
