The Bateq were first documented by a Westerner Nicholai Miklukho-Maklai of Russia in 1878. Until 1970, the Batqe were widespread, but their turf has since been reduced to Taman Negara as the Malaysian jungle was deforested for logging.
Bateq are hunter-gatherers. They lead a nomadic lifestyle in groups of about 10 families. The Bateq do not have a concept of land ownership, so they just make use of the land immediately around the place they settle. Once the resources within the site has been exhausted, they move to another spot.
Where food is concerned, the Bateq share among members of their group. Normally the immediate family gats the first share, followed by the extended family, and then the rest of the group. Where meat is concerned, there is a more formal way of dividing it. The members of the hunting party get the offal and the tail, parts which cook the fastest, then the balance meat is divided and apportioned to each family in the group according to the family size.
