About BoriaBoria is a traditional performing art of Malaysia. It is said to have been created in Penang in the late 19th century, based on traditional dances originating in Persia and introduced to Penang by Indian Muslim traders from India. Today it has become a performance associated with the Penang Malay community.The lead singer is called the tukang karang. He leads in the singing accompanied by a chorus of men called latar. In some ways, boria is similar to Dikir Barat, with some noted differences. Boria is performed standing while Dikir Barat is performed seated. The costume for boria bears some similarity to that of Malacca Portuguese dances, while that of Dikir Barat is traditional Malay costume. Boria is usually performed to the accompaniment of violin, maracas and tabla. The performances incorporates songs with dance sketches and drama. There would be an Indian man carrying a walking stick. He is the comedian in boria sketches. |
