Chinatown is the part of the Historic City of Malacca on the west side of the Malacca River. It is given this name due to the predominantly Chinese character of this part of town.

The Chinatown of Malacca comprises three main streets namely Heeren Street, Jonker Street and Blacksmith Street.

Today it is a lot of fun exploring the Malacca Chinatown. This is where you can buy confectioneries and tit bits. When you are hungry, drop in to try the Malacca chicken rice balls. Thirsty? Try a Malacca cendol. There is a dim sum shop across the street from the Kampung Keling Mosque that I love to visit in the morning.

Chinatown is not all Chinese, of course. You will find the Sri Poyyatha Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia, as well as the Kampung Kling Mosque, also one of the oldest. Further down the street is the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, one of the most opulent Chinese temples (and of course, the oldest) in Malacca. It received an award from UNESCO for the conservation it carried out on the temple building.

Jonker Street becomes lively on the weekend when it is turned into a pedestrianised zone for the Jonker Walk night market. This is where you can try out the local delicacies and do some souvenir shopping.
