Chitty are a distinctive group of Indians born in Malacca and Singapore who call themselves as Indian Peranakans. Like the Baba Nyonyas, the Chitty speak Malay, in their case peppered with Tamil loan words. They are the descendents of Tamil traders from Panai in Tamil Nadu who settled in Malacca during the time of the Sultanate period. Over time, they began to adopt local customs at the expense of their own. However, the Chittys remain Hindus. In Malacca, the main Hindu temple, the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple, was built in 1781 by the leader of the Chitty people, Thavinayagar Chitty, after the Dutch provided land for the construction.
Today the Chitty maintained their village at Kampung Tujuh along Jalan Gajah Berang. The village, also known as Kampung Gajah Berang, is being promoted as a place where tourists can glimpse the Chitty culture. A Chitty museum is also established by the community there.
