About Chong Yang FestivalChong Yang Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival, is a Chinese festival celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Although most Chinese people in Malaysia are no longer practising it, it is one of the celebrations that we are now keen to revive, and I find it being promoted as one of the Chinese festivals in Penang. It is a day where people go outside for outdoor activities, the preference being something close to nature, such as hiking and climbing, and in general enjoying the beauty of the environment. In China, Chong Yang Festival takes place in the autumn, which is one of the most beautiful times of the year, which a riot of autumn colours and clear blue skies.Chong Yang Festival traces its roots to the Taoist concept of Ying and Yang, the two opposing forces of nature. Ying represents the feminine, negative force, while Yang represents the masculine, positive force. The entire universe achieves a balance or equilabrium through the harmony of Ying and Yang. On the ninth day of the ninth month, it is believed that there is a full and complete balance of Yang and Yang. This belief in Ying and Yang forms the basis of the Chinese legend from which Chong Yang Festival originates. Once upon a time, there was a man named Huan Jing, who was learning magical arts from one Master Fei Changfang. Master Fei has achieved immortality through years of practicing Taoism. One day, while Huan Jing and Master Fei were out hiking in the mountains, Master Fei had a disturbing vision, and he related it to Huan Jing. He told Huan Jing that a calamity will fall on Huan Jing's home on the ninth day of the ninth month. To avoid the calamity, every member of Huan Jing's family must get out of the home and go into the wilderness. They should each carry a red pouch and a spray of dogwood. They should also drink chrysanthemum wine. By doing so, they would be spared the calamity. Huan Jing rushed home and did exactly as he was instructed. Before daybreak on the ninth day of the ninth month, the whole family got out of the house, each carrying a red pouch, a spray of dogwood, and a good supply of chrysanthemum wine. They spent the whole day climbing the mountains, and only returned when the sun is down. On reaching home, they were shocked to see that all the poultry and livestock were dead. However, all the members of Huan Jing's household survived the calamity. Since then, the Chinese celebrated the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar by doing out for an outdoor activity, some bringing along a red bag and a spray of dogwood, as well as a supply of chrysanthemum wine. |
