About Dikir Barat

Dikir Barat is a traditional performing art of Malaysia. It is said to be the secularised version of zikir, a form of incantation in praise of Allah.

Dikir Barat is performed by two opposing troupes who sing in a call-and-respond pattern. Each troupe is lead by a lyricist or Tukang Karut, and backed by a chorus called Latar or Awok. The striking of a gong starts the Dikir Barat performance. Whatever the Tukang Karut sings, the Latar will repeat while performing some form of hand gestures and motions. Another performer, the Tukang Juara, responds to the Tukang Karut's pantun. The call-and-respond style is similar to Boria, except that Boria is performed standing.
