The Dome of the Rock of Taman Tamadun Islam, Kuala Terengganu, is an Islamic monument on the Temple Mount, in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is a shrine built in AD 691 by the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik, it is the oldest extant example of early Islamic architecture still standing. The engineers in charged were Yazid ibn Salam from Jerusalem and Raja ibn Haywah from Baysan.
The Dome of the Rock was built at a time when Jerusalem was conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate, during the Muslim conquest of Syria. It occupies the site of the Second Jewish Temple which was destroyed during the Roman Siege of Jerusalem of AD 70. The structure was intended as a shrine for pilgrims and not a mosque for public worship.
The Dome is in the shape of a Byzantine martyrium, a place where relics of martyrs are housed during the Byzantine period. The exterior was covered with Iznik tiles during the time of Suleiman the Magnificent. In 1955 the government of Jordan began an extensive renovation program on the shrine, replacing a large number of tiles, some dating back to the time of Suleiman the Magnificent. The dome was covered with a durable aluminium and bronze alloy made in Italy, replacing the lead exterior. King Hussein of Jordan donated $8.2 million to purchase 80 kilograms of gold required to refurbish the exterior of the shrine. The funds came from from selling his houses in London.
