An introduction to the East Coast Islands
The East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia is dotted with sun-drenched islands, from Kelantan in the north, to Johor in the south. The most established of these islands are Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian Besar, where numerous resorts and smaller guesthouses have sprouted up to cater to beach lovers.
From these main islands, visitors can take boat rides to visit outlying islands such as Pulau Rawa and Pulau Susu Dara. The sea over here is crystal clear, and often, the reef grows almost to the surface of the water. Once can enjoy snorkelling among the tropical fishes that come in a rainbow of colours.
Getting to the East Coast
There are boats that leave to specific islands in the East Coast. Those to Redang depart from the village of Merang (with the exception of those to Redang's Berjaya Beach Resort, which leaves from the Shahbandar jetty in Kuala Terengganu). Boats for the Perhentian islands leave Kuala Besut. There are several, both fast and slow boats, to choose from.
When to visit the East Coast
The East Coast Islands are not open all year round due to the northeast monsoon. The time to go should be between the middle of February to the middle of September. Recommended time to go is around March and April.
