The Great Mosque Sidi Uqba of Kairouan at the Taman Tamadun Islam, Kuala Terengganu, is a replica of an Islamic monument in the city of Kairouan in Tunisia. The city of Kairouan, also written Al Qayrawan, is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mosque of Kairouan was built in AD 670 by Uqba ibn Nafi during the time that the city was established. Today it stands as the biggest mosque in Tunisia and one of the oldest in the Islamic world. The design of the mosque also became the model for later mosques in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Between the 9th and 11th centuries, Kairouan was a great center of the Islamic civilization and the mosque was its centerpiece. Students come here to study mathematics, botany, astronomy and medicine from imminent scholars and theologians.
