About the HainaneseHainanese is one of the Chinese dialect groups in Malaysia. They are the minority among the different Chinese dialect groups in the country.Hainanese come to Malaya in the 19th century from the island of Hainan in southern China. They were the latecomers compared to the other dialect groups. As much of the other trades where taken, they found employment as cooks for wealthy Straits Chinese families who are usually Hakkas or Hokkiens. Eventually the Hainanese branched out to open their own food businesses - the most popular being Hainanese Chicken Rice. A good number became fishermen. There are small Hainanese communities in Kemaman in Terengganu, at Pulau Ketam in Selangor, as well as in Penang and Johor Bahru. In the major towns in the peninsula, the Hainanese are most likely to be the ones operating coffee shops, a trend that extends to Sabah and Sarawak. |
