About Hang Li Po

Hang Li Po, also written Hang Li Poh, is said to be the fifth wife of Sultan Mansur Shah of Malacca who reigned from 1456 to 1477. She is believed to be a princess from the Imperial Court of China. However, today many present-day historians have disputed whether Hang Li Po is a real person, or whether she actually was a princess, for several reasons including that she was never mentioned in the Chinese court of the Ming Dynasty, nor does she appear in the genealogical record of the imperial house of the royal family of the Ming Dynasty. Also, her very name Hang Li Po does not match the style in which an imperial Ming princess is titled. Finally, it is forbidden for an aristocractic member of the Ming Dynasty to convert to a foreign religion or belief.

Many historians today believe that the Emperor of China bestowed an honourary title to a mere commoner, elevating her to the status of princess, as in the case of Hang Li Po. This is the reasoning surrounding Hang Li Po, to make her more presentable as a consort to the Sultan of Malacca. However, a lot of other questions remain unanswered, when viewed against the nature of the Chinese imperial dynasties at that time. According to the Malay account, the marriage of Hang Li Po to Sultan Mansur Shah was a marriage alliance. This is disputed by historians because the Ming Dynasty and the Sung Dynastry before it, did not practice marriage alliances, and certainly not between China and a relatively insignificant, new country as Malacca. Thus it is debated whether the marriage of Sultan Mansur Shah to Hang Li Poh is a fabrication with the political motive of enhancing Malay supremacy.

According to Sejarah Melayu, the Malay Annals, Tun Perpatih Putih was sent by Sultan Mansur Shah as his envoy to the Imperial Court of China. Hang Li Poh was sent from China to be the bride of the Sultan of Malacca. She arrived with a 500-strong contingent. She was married to Sultan Mansur Shah after she converted to Islam. Thereafter the Sultan built a palace for Hang Li Poh. It is situated in Bukit Cina, the location of the Chinese cemetery in Malacca today.
