About Hang TuahHang Tuah is a legendary warrior during the reign of Sultan Mansur Shah, during the Malacca Sultanate. Hang Tuah is said to be the greatest of a band of warriors which include Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekiu and Hang Lekir. The legend of Hang Tuah is documented in the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melayu) and Tales of Hang Tuah (Hikayat Hang Tuah). Hang Tuah is portraited as a warrior with unfailing loyalty to his sultan.Taming SariHang Tuah's most famous dagger, or keris, is called Taming Sari. Taming Sari is the name of a Majapahit warrior. On a visit to Majapahit, the Majapahit warrior Taming Sari had challenged Hang Tuah to a duel. When Hang Tuah overcame Taming Sari, the ruler of Majapahit bestowed upon Hang Tuah Taming Sari's keris, which is said to have magical power that makes the owner invincible. This keris is said to be the source of Hang Tuah's power.Tun TejaThe Hikayat Hang Tuah and Sejarah Melayu accounted two different versions of another story involving Hang Tuah and Tun Teja. Tun Teja was a princess from Inderaputa, Pahang. Sultan Mansur Shah ordered Hang Tuah to visit Inderaputa with the task of persuading Tun Teja, who was already engaged, to become the Sultan's wife. According to Hikayat Hang Tuah, Hang Tuah falsely gave Tun Teja the impression that he have come to persuade her to marry him, not the Sultan, and she agreed to elope with him to Malacca. It was only on the journey to Malacca that Hang Tuah revealed his deception to Tun Teja. However, according to Sejarah Melayu, it was not Hang Tuah who deceived Tun Teja, but rather another warrior, Hang Nadim.Hang JebatProbably the most famous tale surrounding Hang Tuan revolved around his cloest childhood friend and fellow warrior, Hang Jebat. It illustrates the depth of Hang Tuah's loyalty to his Sultan, and also explores the the concept of blind loyalty in feudal societies. In this tale, enemies of Hang Tuah fed the Sultan with false rumours that Hang Tuah was having illicit affair with one of his concubines. Without investigating the offense, the Sultan issued an order to his prime minister, the Bendahara, that Hang Tuah be put to death. However, the Bendahara did not execute that order. Knowing that Hang Tuah was innocent, he hid Hang Tuah away in a remote region of Malacca, and announced that he has put Hang Tuah to death.When Hang Jebat learned of the news, he believed that the sultan had unjustly murdered his good friend, and he set forth to avenge Hang Tuah's death. He run amok in the Sultan's palace, in the process killing a number of people. (There were different versions of what he did, but most agree that Hang Jebat caused some form of disturbance). The Sultan was unable to stop Hang Jebat, who was the second most skilled warrior after Hang Tuah himself. It was then that the Bendahara revealed to the Sultan that Hang Tuah was not dead. He was recalled from his hiding place and was given full amnesty by the sultan with the instruction to kill Hang Jebat. Hang Tuah killed Hang Jebat after seven gruelling days of fighting. The above version of the story comes from Hikayat Hang Tuah, the more romanticised account of Hang Tuah. However, according to the more historically factual Sejarah Melayu, it was Hang Kasturi who had an illicit affair. Nonetheless, the version from Hikayat Hang Tuah is the more popular. Puteri Gunung LedangAnother significant story involving Hang Tuah is that of the Puteri Gunung Ledang. This story took place when Hang Tuah was already advanced in age, and happened with a subsequent sultan, Sultan Mahmud Shah, ordered him to go up Gunung Ledang to submit a proposal to the princess who stayed there, to marry him. According to legend, the princess gave a list of conditions which the sultan was unable to meet. |
