About Headhunter's Trail
Headhunter's Trail is a hiking trek in the Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak. The route connects Gunung Mulu National Park to Limbang, and was named after the Kayan headhunters who used it on their raids up Sungai Melinau to the Melinau Gorge.
Today's non-belligerent trekkers can negotiate the same course by first taking a boat to Long Berar, and then walk along the Melinau Trail to Camp 5. The walk takes about 4 hours, and you can overnight at Camp 5 for RM20 per person. While in Camp 5, you can consider a detour to climb the Pinnacles, which should consume the whole of the following day. Otherwise, on the next day, your trek goes from Camp 5 to Sungai Terikan, a journey of 4-5 hours. Accommodation is available at the Mentawai ranger's station, for RM20 per person. Alternatively, you can continue down river for another 3-4 hours, to reach the well-equipped Iban longhouse. An overnight there, and then it's on to Medamit, from where you hop on to the bus (RM4.00) or minivan (RM60) to Limbang.
As for the cost, the boat to Long Berar is RM250, the boat from Sungai Terikan to Medamit is between RM400 to RM450, and the guide fees should be around RM400 per group, food and lodging at the longhouse is around RM30 per person, add to that miscellaneous fees for your accommodation at Camp 5, gifts for the longhouse headmen and children, and a tip for your guide.
