About the Ida'an

The Ida'an are an ethnic group of Borneo. They live mostly in the Lahad Datu districts on the east coast of Sabah. They are considered a subgroup of the Kadazan-Dusun.

There are presently only about 6000 Ida'an people (1987 est.) It is believed that their numbers and distribution has shrunked over the centuries, as they used to live in a much larger area than today. The Ida'an are the traditional collectors of bird's nest from the limestone caves of the region, most notably Madai Caves.

The majority of Ida'an today are Muslim, although there is still a small sub-group called the Bega'ak, with a population of only about 1,500 people (1987 est.) that are still animist.
