About the Illanun
Illanun is a tribe living in Sabah. They originate from Mindanao, the Philippines. Today there are about 25 villages around Kota Belud and Lahad Datu with Illanun people.
The Illanun are traditionally regarded as fierce pirates, so much so that their name crept into the Malay language, where the word "lanun" means "pirate".
