About the Indians

Indian forms one of the major ethnic groups in Malaysia. Most of the Indians in Malaysia today trace their ancestry to the large scale migration of Indians following the British acquisition of Penang and Singapore, when a steady flow of Indian labourers, traders, soldiers and convicts streamed into the country. They were involved in construction - many of the earliest colonial buildings in Penang were built using Indian convict labourers. Later on, Indian labourers were brought in to work in the rubber, palm oil and tea plantations. Most of these Indian labourers were adult, single males from India and Sri Lanka.

The majority of the Indians brought over were Tamils, from the state of Tamil Nadu. They were transported here by way of Chennai. They are the ones who were employed as estate workers, as well as those who took on manual jobs in the public works department. Not all south Indians were labourers. The Chettiars, who usually speak the Telegu language, are involved in money lending. In addition, there is a smaller number of North Indians who have migrated to Malaysia. Among the North Indians, the Sikhs were brought to Malaya to be employed as police, to work in the armed forces (as sepoy) and later on, as security guards. The other North Indians came mainly as merchants and businessmen. They include the Gujaratis and Sindhis, which owned a number of textile mills in the country.

The majority of Indians in Malaysia are Hindus, with a smaller percentage who have converted to Christianity. Among the Christians, the Roman Catholic Indians outnumber the Protestants. There is also a sizeable number of Tamil Muslims. Many of these have assimilated themselves into the Malay society.

In Malacca and Singapore, there is also a small group of Tamil Indians who call themselves as Peranakan. They are known as the Chitty.
