Istana Besar, Johor
About Istana Besar
Istana Besar, or Grand Palace, was the former residence of Sultan Abu Bakar. The white structure is surrounded by sweeping lawns. It was built in 1864, and over its history, has hosted the Duke of Edinburgh (son of Queen Victoria), the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and the future King Edward VIII, who eventually abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. Although Istana Besar still belongs to the Sultan of Johor, it has been opened to the public since 1991, and is home to the Royal Abu Bakar Museum.
