About Japanese Building
The Japanese Building, as it is called, is the only purpose-built administrative building which was erected by the Japanese Occupational Force in Kuching during the Second World War. It was built using forced labour from the prisoners-of-war who were detained at the Batu Lintang Camp. Every day they were marched to the site to build it.
The construction of the Japanese Building cut off the connection from India Street to Carpenter Street. The link was only reestablished when a passageway was created through the building in 1989.
