About Jimmy Choo

Jimmy Choo is a famous women's shoes designer based in London. Born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat, and now titled Dato' Jimmy Choo OBE, Jimmy was born in Penang in 1961. A Hakka Chinese, Jimmy comes from a family of shoemakers.

Jimmy Choo studied at the Cordwainers' Technical College, in Hackney, East London. The college is now under the umbrella of the London College of Fashion. Jimmy opened his first workshop in Hackney in 1986 within a rented former hospital building. His shoe designs grabbed popular attention when it was featured in a record eight pages of a 1998 issue of Vogue. Following that, patronage from the late Diana, Princess of Wales, further boosted his popularity.

In 1996, Jimmy Choo co-founded Jimmy Choo ltd with British Vogue accessories editor Tamara Mellon. However, he sold off his stake in 2001 for £10 million. Since then, he has concentrated on his exclusive Jimmy Choo Couture line.

While still based in London, Jimmy Choo is presently working to set up a shoemaking institute in malaysia, banking on his iconic status. His celebrity has not gone unnoticed. He was awared a Datukship by the Sultan of Pahang in the year 2000, and the OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002. He also received another Datukship from his home state of Penang, when he was conferred the Darjah Setia Pankuan negeri by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang in 2004.
