About Kangkar Tebrau

Kangkar Tebrau is a neighbourhood in Tebrau, Johor Bahru. From its name, we can tell that it is a riverside settlement. In the 19th century, the Sultan of Johor allowed Chinese settlers - usually ethnic Teochew, Hakka and some Hokkien - to develop the land by establishing riverside settlements called kangkar, which is Teochew and Hokkien for "riverside" (literally, at the foot of the river). These kangkar settlements are headed by the kangchu, "River Master", a leader of the Chinese community who received a deed (Surat Sungai or River Deed) from the Sultan to collect tax of the crops produced.
Kangkar Tebrau is one of many kangkar settlement that used to dot the state of Johor.
