Kedayan People of Sabah
|
About the Kedayan
Kedayan is a tribe that lives in Brunei, Labuan, Sabah and parts of Sarawak. Their name is also written as Kadayan, Kadaian and Kadyan. They are thought to be related to, or a subtribe of the Kadazan-Dusun. In Sabah, they live in Sipitang, Beaufort and Kuala Penyu. In Sarawak, they live in Lawas, Limbang, Miri and Sibuti.
Kedayan people are mostly Muslim and have adopted much of the Malay culture through the Sultanate of Brunei. They are rice farmers with a reputation for understanding medicinal plants. Their houses are built in a cluster patten, with the houses in the center and the fields radiating outwards. They are inward looking, and are not fond of contact with outsiders.
