Kenyir Lake, Terengganu

Kenyir Lake is the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia. Located in Terengganu, it covers an area of 260 sq km. The lake was created in 1985 following the damming of Sungai Kenyir for the Sultan Mahmud Power Station.
The formation of Kenyir Lake submerges whole tracks of forest and hill ranges. Now only the highest parts of the hills appear above the lake, forming some of the 340 islets around the lake. Also found in parts of the lake are submerged tree trunks and dead trees standing with their legs underwater.
The creation of Kenyir Lake has been a bliss for freshwater fish. There are 300 species recorded in the lake. The submerged tree trunks act as the perfect breeding ground for these fishes. The water level of the lake is highest during the months of March and April, which are also the best months to visit the lake.
Tourism activities have been promoted at Kenyir Lake including water sports such as canoeing, rafting and shooting the rapids. Visitors can also go jungle trekking to visit some of the waterfalls and caves in the vicinity of the lake.
