Kota Belud is a town in the West Coast Division in central Sabah. The town has a population of 72,000 (2000 est) and is located north of Tuaran. The Pan Borneo Highway passes through it.

Kota Belud is best known for the weekly open air market, called Tamu, that is held there every Sunday. The harvest festival, Pesta Kaamatan, is held in Kota Belud in May every year.

Pulau Mantanani, an island with a lighthouse off the Kota Belud coast, has coral reefs ideal for snorkelling and wreck diving. For arrangements, contact Scuba Paradise (tel: 089 266695, www.scubaparadiseborneo.com.my)

Getting there

You can take minivans or shared taxis to Kota Belud. They cost about RM5 for the two-hour journey.
