Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library (Former Government Printing Office)

The Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library was formerly the Government Printing Office building. I photographed it one lovely morning when the sky was relatively blue. There is an old wing and a new annex. The Government Printer, J Russell, helped the Public Works Department architects in designing the ideal printing office which includes a structural support system of cast iron columns and trusses. This is necessary to allow for open interior to house the large printing press machines.

The style of the Government Printing Office contrasts with that of the other government buildings. The outer wall is of exposed bricks with plastered columns. The upper parts of the ground floor windows are semi-circular and decorated with keystones. Canopy roofs were added to the building in the 1940s and retained in the last renovation, in 1986, when the building was then converted to house the Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library.
Update
December 2011: The Kuala Lumpur City Gallery opens within the Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library building.
Getting there
The nearest rapid transit station is the RapidKL Masjid Jamek LRT Station, served by the Ampang Line (ST5) and the Kelana Jaya Line (KJ13).
Getting there from the Masjid Jamek station involves a bit of walking. From the station, go northwest along Jalan Tun Perak until intersection with Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Turn left, follow Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman south until it merges with Jalan Raja. You will see Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad on your left while Dataran Merdeka is on your right. At the next intersection, turn left, and you will arrive at the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery on your left.
