Sessions & Magistrates Court (Mahkamah Sesyen & Majistret, Old Survey Department), Kuala Lumpur

The Mahkamah Sesyen & Majistret (Sessions & Magistrates Courts) is located along Jalan Tun Perak, a short distance from the Masjid Jamek Ampang Line and Kelana Jaya Line LRT Stations. I took this tight-angled photo of it from Jalan Tun Perak, where there is hardly any good angle to shoot it because of the STAR LRT line running overhead. The Mahkamah Sesyen building was constructed in 1910 to house the Federated Malay States Survey Department. A main feature of this building is its 121.9m (400ft) long arcade with two entrances, each topped with a chatri, the umbrella-like roof design of Mughal architecture (often referred incorrectly as Moorish).

At both ends of this building are octagonal towers with onion-shaped domes. Along the arcade are the distinctive cinque-foil arches that creates a powerful geometric rhythm along the street. Adjacent to it is the Old City Hall, now Panggung Bandaraya. Although the building today houses the Sessions & Magistrates Courts, it is still popularly referred to as the Old Survey Department Building.
