About Kuching Waterfront

Kuching Waterfront is the esplanade on the south bank of the Sarawak River in Kuching. In the 19th century, this area had warehouses and wharves, and was very busy with ships coming in to dock.

Today the area has been redeveloped and paved. There are cafes and food stalls operating where coolies and stevedores used to work. There are many heritage buildings along the Kuching Waterfront including the Square Tower and the Sarawak Steamship Company building. As you stand by the railing looking downwards at the Sarawak River below, you can see the ferry sampans called tambang going back and forth bringing commuters across the river. It costs just about 30 sen to cross the river, or RM1.00 after 10:00pm. Just leave the exact change on the prow as you disembark.

In the evening, the Kuching Waterfront is quiet, with the lights of Astana and Fort Margherita reflecting on the river.
