About Kueh Seng Onn Temple

Kueh Seng Onn Temple, also known as the Hong San Si Temple, is a Taoist temple of the Hokkien community in Kuching. The temple was first built in 1895 and dedicated to Kong Teck Choon Ong, the patron deity. According to oral history, during the great fire of Kuching in 1884, the locals saw a vision of a child deity waving a black flag to put out the flames. This was taken as an auspicious sign. As a memorial to the incident, an annual procession is staged on the 22nd day of the 2nd lunar month.

As with most Taoist temples, a stage was erected for the entertainment of the deities. This is where opera performances, or wayang, were staged during the temple feast days. The present Kueh Seng Onn Temple is quite recent, as it was rebuilt in 2005. All its main doors have elaborately painted door gods. The walls and columns are stonework of the Sung dynasty style.
