The Kul Sharif Mosque of Taman Tamadun Islam, Kuala Terengganu, is the replica of an Islamic monument in Kazan Kremlin, Russia. Built in the 16th century, it is the largest mosque in Russia as well as Europe outside of Istanbul. The architecture of the mosque is a fusion of Volga Bulgarian style with elements of early Renaissance and Ottoman architecture. The design of the St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow is said to have adopted some elements of the Kul Sharif Mosque, particularly in the placement of the 8 minarets and central cupola which are not typical of Russian architecture.
The present Kul Sharif Mosque is a reconstruction completed in 1996. The original mosque was destroyed in 1552 when Ivan the Terrible stormed Kazan. To learn more about the mosque, click here to visit my page on the Kul Sharif Mosque of Kazan Kremlin.
