About Kundasang
Kundasang is a village in the West Coast Division of Sabah. Located in the Kundasang Valley, it is noted for its vegetable market. Being the nearest village to Mount Kinabalu - it's a mere 6 km from Kinabalu Park from here - Kundasang affords panoramic views of the mountain.
The only sight worth mentioning in Kundasang (apart from the aforementioned mountain) is the Kundasang War Memorial. It was erected to commemorate the 2428 Australian and British prisioners who died in the Sandakan Prisoner-of-War Camp as well as casualties of the three infamous forced death marches during World War II. The memorial also celebrate the locals who risked their own lives to aid these POWs. The memorial was initiated by Major G.S. Carter of the Shell Oil Co., the same person who proposed Kinabalu National Park. The memorial garden comprises four interlocking gardens planted with flowering plants representing the homelands of those who perished. There is an Australian Garden, a formal English Garden, a Borneo Garden, and a Comtemplation Garden.
