About Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is a private sanctuary founded by a plantation owner to protect the rare monkeys. It is located south of Sandakan. The proboscis monkeys, called orang belanda (Dutchman) in Malay, is renowned for their unusual appearance, particularly their big nose that make them look just like humans. At the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, visitors can see the monkeys being fed twice a day, once at 11:30 am and again at 4:30 pm. The monkeys are given a meal of sugar-free pancakes. Often joining the feast are uninvited macaques.
