Malaysia Book Village, Langkawi
|
Malaysia Book Village, also known nowadays as Langkawi Book Village, is a minor tourist attraction in the mukim of Ulu Melaka, Langkawi. Opened in 1987, it was one of the earliest man-made attractions to be built in Langkawi. I have to honestly say that I have been curious about this place. As a book lover, I wanted to find out what this is all about.
According to information that I have read on the web, I can get lots of rare titles at this book village, said to be the first in Southeast Asia, and modelled after Hay-on-Wye in Wales. I was told that there would be six kampung houses that are stocked up with books. Located in the tranquil setting at Lubok Semilang, it is a major attraction for book lovers and collectors.
The reality is much less impressive. Well, maybe it's because I come from a big city where I have access to lots of books, but the Malaysia Book Village does not impress me much. Contrary to expectation, there are fewer titles - perhaps I should have visited it years earlier. Not all six houses in the village is full of books. Most of the books are not even in good condition. The public library back home has a wider selection of titles.
I am hardly surprised by the failure of Langkawi Book Village, given that this is not a society of book lovers, more so a rural community as Langkawi. Of course in every society there are those who read for pleasure, but that speaks for the absolute minority. Nonetheless, if you are a visiting book lover in Langkawi, you might just want to drop by, out of curiosity.
When you are done, proceed to Lubok Semilang Recreational Forest nearby.
