About LatLat, whose real name is Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid, is the most famous cartoonist in Malaysia. His cartoons appear in the New Straits Times, a Malaysian daily.Lat was born in Kota Baru, Perak. From a young age, he was already a talented cartoonist. His first real book, Tiga Sekawan, was published when he was in Standard Six, at Jalan Pasir Puteh Primary School in Ipoh. He was paid M$25 for that work. Lat later moved to Kuala Lumpur where he found a job at the New Straits Times, as a crime reporter. However, he later admitted that he was a poor reporter, preferring to spend his time as a cartoonist. Eventually his talent caught the attention of the editor, and soon he landed the position of editorial cartoonist in 1974. That was the beginning of his "Scenes of Malaysian Life" single-frame comics, providing a humourous spin on the political and social situations in Malaysia. In 1979, his first book Kampung Boy was published. It is an autobiography of his young life. It was a best seller bought by many who normally would not be buying comics. Among the signatures of his work was the way he draws the nose, which looks like a "w". In 1994 Lat was honoured with a "Datuk" which is the Malaysian equivalent of a "Sir". |
