About MahsuriMahsuri is a legendary personality in Malaysian history. She is associated with the history of the island of Langkawi. Her "call to fame" is for being wrongly accused of adultery and unjustly put to death.Born Mahsuri bte Pandak Mayah, she was the wife of a brave warrior named Wan Darus. They lived in the state of Kedah which in the 19th century was constantly under the threat of Siamese invasion. When her husband was called away to war, Mahsuri was left on her own. It was then that she befriended a young handsome man by the name of Deraman. Deraman was a wandering minstrel from Malacca. He arrived at her village at Padang Matsirat, and they became friends. As he did not have a place to stay, Mahsuri allowed him to live in a room within her house. However the villagers who were envious of Mahsuri's beauty stirred up a rumour falsely accusing Mahsuri of having an affair with Deraman. The penalty for adultery was death by stabbing. Mahsuri was tied to a tree. She pleaded her innocence but no one believed her, or rather, her enemies wanted her dead. When they stabbed her, it is said that white blood flowed out from her wound. This, in the village belief, was a sign of her innocence. With her dying breath, Mahsuri laid a curse on Langkawi that the island will be laid waste for the next seven generation. True to her words, just two years after her death, the Siamese in 1821 invaded Langkawi, leaving the island in desolation. Thereafter decades of failed crops followed. It was only at the end of the 20th century, after the seven generations had come to pass, that Langkawi began to prosper as a prime tourist destination. Following her death, her husband Wan Darus decided to leave Langkawi. He moved to Phuket with his young son, Wan Akhem. Today Mahsuri's descendants are still living in Phuket. The first seventh-generation descendent was discovered by the Kedah Historical Society as a young woman named Sirintra Yayee, whose Muslim name is Wan Aishah Wan Nawawi. She is the daughter of Wan Nawawi, who is the son of Wan Hasheen, the son of Wan Hussein, the son of Wan Hakay, the son of Wan Akhem, the son of Wan Darus, husband of Mahsuri. |
