About Mak Yong

Mak Yong is a traditional performing art of Malaysia. It originates from Kelantan and neighbouring Pattani is southern Thailand. It is not known how old Mak Yong is, as the art was handed down orally from one generation to another. Due to its non-Muslim origin - Mak Yong has its roots in animism as well as Hindu-Buddhist dances - it was banned by the PAS government of Kelantan in 1991, and can now only be performed outside the state. In 2005, it was honoured by UNESCO as "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity", creating a renewal of interest in this artform.

All the performers of Mak Yong are women, some playing the role of men. This can be determined by their costume. The male characters in Mak Yong wear short sleeve costume, with a sampin and pants. The front of the shirt is adorned with beadwork. The women characters wear their hair long, and to one side.

Mak Yong performances start with a "buka panggung" or "curtains up" ritual. This ritual is usually performed backstage away from the audience. It is carried out to call the spirits to enter the performers. Due to this animist aspect of Mak Yong, nowadays the buka panggung is performed in front of live audience and any elements associated with calling the spirits is dropped.

As with so many traditional Malay performing arts, Mak Yong performances were usually staged for healing purposes. It may involve trance dancing and spirit possesion. These healing rituals, while still being performed in some places, are usually disdained by practising Muslims.
