About Malaysian English

The name Malaysian English, as covered in this article, refers to the Malaysian Colloquil English as spoken in Malaysia. Also called Manglish, a portmanteau of Malay and English, it shares many similarities with the Engllish spoken in Singapore, often known as Singlish.

Although a good number of Malaysians are able to speak Standard English, albeit with a combined influence of American English over a base of British English, in general most English speakers in Malaysia are able to converse in Malaysian English, whether deliberately or otherwise.

Not many Malaysians are able to speak English at the acrolect level, that is to say, impeccably close to Queen's English. The majority, including professionals, academics and other English-educated Malaysians, speak English at the mesolect level, that is to say, somewhere in the middle ground. It is not uncommon to hear Malaysians speaking what they consider to be proper English, but is actually English words according to a local - most often Hokkien - sentence structure. For example, "You want to come or not?", sometimes Americanised to "You wanna come or not?" Even Malaysian children in English-speaking homes quickly learn to speak at the mesolect level, for example, "Don't go yet lah".

The particle "lah", which appears in both Hokkien and Malay, regularly creeps into casual conversations, and has stubbornly taken root in the English spoken by Malaysians and Singaporeans. In casual conversations between Malaysians, lah is accepted, even welcomed, as it adds intimacy to the speech. However, it is not standard English, and many Malaysians attempt to speak the language without falling back to the local grammatical structure. But it is something many find hard to rid themselves. Even when they speak to their Western bosses and attempting to impress their superiors on the fluency of their English, they may carelessly utter the lah, much to their own chagrin.

At the lowest level is market place English, spoken by those who are not fluent in the language, who are not grounded in the grammar, and is heavily dependent on the sentence structure of a local dialect, chiefly Malay or Hokkien. This is the English used by non-speakers who are forced by circumstances to speak English, say a sidewalk vendor bargaining with a tourist. In such instances, the sentences are kept simple and short, to reduce the risk of unintelligibility.
