 Mantin Travel Guide, Negri Sembilan
Mantin is a small town in Nilai District, Negri Sembilan. It is located near Lenggeng and Pajam, on the northern part of Negri Sembilan, near the border with Selangor. According to local stories, the actual name of the area was Setul. However, it became known as Mantin because it was once a tin mining area, and Mantin is in fact a corruption of the phrase "mine tin".
Tin mining was carried out in a large scale in Mantin during the third quarter of the 19th century, attracting Chinese tin miners who were then leaving China in droves due to famine and also political disturbances brought on by the Taiping Rebellion. They were polarised to the two main clan associations, Hai San and Ghee Hin, which frequently clashed. Eventually the Hai Sans had the upper hand, and its leader became the Kapitan or community chief of the Chinese.
Visiting Mantin
The LEKAS Expressway (E21, acronym of Kajang-Seremban Highway) is the main highway to Mantin. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, you can use this highway from Kajang while from Seremban, enter the highway at Paroi.
