About Membakut
Membakut is a small town in the Beaufort district of the Interior Division of Sabah. The North Borneo Railway makes a stop here. It is located slightly to the north of Beaufort and south of Bongawan.
The name Membakut comes from a Brunei dialect. The word "bakut" means "fort", while the prefix "mem" means "to erect". Hence Membakut means "to erect a fort". It originates from a settlement along a river about 5 km from the shore. At that time, it was known as Bua. The name was changed at the suggestion of a community leader, Hj. Saman Md Yaakub.
