The Dataran Merdeka Flagpole at Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur, is the tallest flagpole in the world. It stands at a height of 100 meter (328 ft) tall. This is where the independence of the then Malaya was announced. The flagpole commemorates the spot where the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag (now called the Jalur Gemilang) was hoisted for the first time. The event took place on midnight of 31 August, 1957.
